USC President Aleksei Rakhmanov noted the success of the UTW in the production of steam turbines for nuclear icebreakers

“Our icebreakers are already waiting for these turbines. I am glad to see that the work at the UTW is completed. Now the major role is played by our St. Petersburg partners, who must assemble a ready-made steam turbine unit. Unfortunately, the work they do is not as good as the Urals colleagues do. Therefore, we would very much like the Ural Turbine Works to undertake an even greater work scope in the future, since we are still waiting for two more LK-60 icebreakers and, most likely, two LK-120 icebreakers, which will require similar solutions. There should be a real reliable supplier who can do this work as a whole, from start to finish”, said Aleksei Rakhmanov, President of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, during the visit to the Ural Turbine Works.


With the help of new engineering solutions and alloys, computer modeling and high-precision calculations, the Ural Turbine Works has created a highly efficient machine that meets all the requirements of the TND-17 new-generation icebreakers. The turbine withstands overloads up to 6g, works without vibrations in any modes and has high maneuverability. In an hour the machine is capable of gaining maximum power and resetting it to zero more than 60 times. At the same time, the overhaul period of the unit reaches 20 years, which is four times longer than that of alternatives used in traditional power industry. The new UTW marine type turbine consists of 5 thousand parts and weighs about 70 tons.


“I want to thank the USC for their trust. The Ural Turbine Works has already made steam turbines for the fleet, but more than half a century has passed since that moment. Steam turbines for ships with nuclear power installation represent a new product line. Our design bureau, as well as the whole enterprise, has done a lot of work to ensure the production of these machines. The turbines have already been accepted by the Register of Shipping, and we are submitting them to shipbuilders on time”, said Mikhail Lifshits, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ural Turbine Works.

“It is not the first case of cooperation after the signing of an agreement between the Sverdlovsk Oblast and the USC. Sverdlovsk Oblast is proud that our equipment will be used on such beautiful, modern nuclear powered vessels. Let them serve as long as possible, proving that the design and engineering schools in the Urals have been preserved”, said Sergey Perestoronin, Minister of Industry and Science of the Sverdlovsk Oblast.

The plant completed the manufacture of four TND-17 steam turbines for the Ural and Sibir icebreakers in June of this year. After assembly and testing, steam turbine units will be installed in the icebreaker hulls at the Baltic shipyard.
